"The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.”
T’was the Night Before Christmas. A Visit from St. Nicholas
The tradition of Christmas stockings dates back to well over two centuries ago. It was in 1843 that Clement Clarke Moore wrote the famous poem, A Visit from Nicholas that romanticized Christmas stockings.
Why We Hang Up Stockings by The Fireplace
The Christmas stocking legend has it that a widowed father of three girls was having a tough time making ends meet. Because of their impoverished state, it would be difficult for the girls to marry. St. Nicholas was wandering through the town where the family lived and heard villagers discussing the family. He wanted to help but knew the man wouldn’t take his charity. So, while the family was sleeping, he entered the house through the chimney and placed gold coins in the girls’ recently laundered stockings by the fireplace and then disappeared into the night. Today fun stocking stuffers have become an exciting way to start Christmas Day and keep the spirit of St. Nicholas alive.
