Superberries Blog - 7 Ways to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

August is National Eye Exam Month. Because so many of us are spending more time in front of screens working than ever before, it is important to pay attention to our eye health. Behavior and nutrition both play a part in maintaining optimal eye function. Superberries Aroniaberries support eye health.  Here are 7 ways to help keep your eyes healthy every month.

1.    Hydrate

One of the best habits to maintain is properly hydrating daily. Like all our organs, eyes are affected by the amount of water we consume. When we do not hydrate enough, our bodies conserve fluid, and the liquid in our eyes is some of the first to be reabsorbed by the body. This can cause dry eye and vision problems as well as long-term eye health issues. If you drink plenty of liquid and you still struggle with dry eye, lubricating eye drops or overnight eye gels might help.

2.    Adjust Your Screens

We have all heard about the dangers of too much screen time. The blue light emitted by screens can affect our circadian rhythms because it tricks our brains into believing it is still daytime. We can also experience eye strain from staring at screens for long periods. Be sure to situate the top of your computer screen just below eye level, take frequent short eye breaks by staring at a distant object for 20-30 seconds at a time, blink frequently, and adjust the light to prevent glare.

3. Eat a Balanced Diet

This is good advice for everyone whether they work in front of screens or not, but certain nutritious foods are especially good for your eye health. Nutrients such as anthocyanins, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E are believed to help prevent or delay age-related vision problems. These nutrients can be found in leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, non-meat protein sources, and fish. Aronia berries are another good source of anthocyanins and Superberries Aronia Berry Products are versatile enough to be used in salads, desserts, and smoothies. Superberries Aronia Berry Gummies are easy-to-eat snacks you can keep handy all the time.

4. Wear Sunglasses

Protecting your eyes is also important when you are outside. Consider them sunscreen for your eyes. Ultra-violet light from the sun can damage the internal structures of the eyes and is especially harsh when reflected off snow, water, and sand. Although it might be tempting to skip the sunglasses when it is cloudy, they still offer protection from the invisible damaging rays.

5. Practice Good Hygiene

Everyone who wears makeup knows that it is important to thoroughly remove all eye makeup before sleeping and replace mascara and eyeliner regularly to avoid spreading bacteria. It is also important to wash your hands frequently and thoroughly and to try to avoid touching your eyes. Unwashed hands can easily transmit bacteria to the eyes and cause infections.

6. Exercise

Exercise increases blood flow to all the body’s organs. Increased blood flow and oxygenation improve eye health. This is just one more good reason to get moving.

7. Sleep

Just like your muscles and your brain, your eyes need rest, too. Eyes need at least 5 hours of sleep per night to replenish themselves. If you do not get enough sleep, you are at risk for eye spasms, blood-shot eyes, and dry eye.

Our eyes are one of our most precious resources, and many of us take them for granted. Following these simple tips will help your eyes and the rest of your body be healthy for life. If you have any concerns, be sure to consult your doctor, and don’t forget to schedule regular eye exams.
