History of the Aronia Berry

Posted by Superberries Team on 7/27/2021 to About the Aroniaberry
The Power of NatureWe love exploring the history of the Aronia berry. The berry was originally used for a number of purposes by the Native American cultures in North America. The leaves and twigs of the Aronia Berry bush were a staple used for medicinal teas and herbal remedies to treat everything from colic to fever. The juice of the berries was used as dyes, war paint, and for treating cuts and abrasions. During the long winter months, dried berries were used to boost nutrition and health among the Native American tribes. Aronia Berries were also used to cure and tenderize various meats. The cured, tenderized meats were called pemmican (dried meats) and were used for food during the harsh winter months when game was scarce.

Benefits of the Aroniaberry vs Blueberry

Aroniaberry vs BlueberryJuly is National Blueberry Month and we thought we would take this opportunity to do a bit of a berry comparison between the better-known blueberry and the lesser-known Aronia Berry. While both berries have their benefits, the Aronia Berry has at least three times the antioxidant power that the blueberry has. Both berries get their rich dark blue and dark purple colors from anthocyanidins, although the Aronia Berry has a greater degree of anthocyanidins which accounts for the darker, richer colors and the higher antioxidants contained in the Aronia Berry.
